1-1 This questions aims to test the student's ability to read and summarize information about a topic in the social sciences, namely, the "prosperity paradox". This paradox describes the case of a nation with strong economic fundamentals (such as GDP per capita) that fails to be accompanied by quality of life for its citizens. The text uses the example of the United States, which ranks top in terms of GDP per capita, yet at the bottom in terms of life expectancy and trust in the government among OECD member states, with life satisfaction in the middle. Explanations given include both economic and social reasons (such as income gains realized mainly for the top 10% of the income distribution and increasing social and political polarization), but also an evolutionary reason: the human brain has developed to thrive in conditions of scarcity, not abundance, which may lead to over-consumption and resulting sickness in wealthy societies. The question also aims to test the student's understanding of the concept of a good life - what is needed to live a happy and fulfilled life? It also invites reflections over the responsibility of governments towards its citizens - should governments prioritize economic growth or citizens' happiness? Lastly, it also relates to questions of sustainability and justice. 문제 1-2 This question aims to test the student's ability to link the contents of the text to either own experiences or examples. It is inte

[A] Government policy in many advanced economies prioritizes economic growth. A recent study from
the United States compared OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) member
states on both economic and social indicators. The United States ranked near the top for GDP per
capita, but near the bottom for life expectancy and trust in the government, with a middle ranking for
overall life satisfaction. Researchers call this a “prosperity paradox” where the economy is strong,
yet people's well-being is low.
[B] The study mentioned several reasons for this paradox. Joseph Romm of the University of
Pennsylvania said that “the strong economic performance has principally provided gains for the
wealthiest 10 percent (of the population)”. Douglas Harris, an economist at Tulane University, added
that “if there is one overall theme, it's that we're pulling apart - economically, socially, and

1-1 The passage discusses the “prosperity paradox”, a situation in which a country enjoys strong economic performance but low overall well-being among its citizens. The United States serves as an example: it ranks highly in GDP per capita but poorly in life expectancy and trust in government, with only average life satisfaction. The text explores several reasons for this paradox. Economic gains have largely benefited the wealthiest 10 percent of the population, contributing to growing inequality and social–political division. Additionally, the passage suggests that modern abundance itself may be harmful: human brains evolved for scarcity, so when resources and pleasures are overly abundant, people tend to overconsume, leading to unhappiness and illness. A complete answer should include these points, showing that economic growth alone does not guarantee social well-being, and briefly describe the key reasons given in the text (inequality, polarization, and evolutionary mismatch). 문제 1-2 This question asks students to reflect on what governments in advanced economies should prioritize — economic growth or citizens’ happiness and life satisfaction. It builds on the themes introduced in the reading passage, particularly the “prosperity paradox,” where economic success does not necessarily lead to well-being. A strong response should clearly state the student’s position and support it with logical reasoning, examples, or ev

(Evaluation) Sub-Question Assessment Criteria Breakdown - The student provides a clear and accurate summary of the passage, correctly identifying the “prosperity paradox” and explaining how economic strength (e.g., GDP per capita) may coexist with low life expectancy, low trust in government, and only moderate life satisfaction. The response includes both reasons for this paradox 상 discussed in the article (income inequality accompanied by social and political division, and evolutionary mismatch between human nature and abundance). The answer is well-organized, coherent, and uses 1-1 appropriate vocabulary. - The student shows a general understanding of the passage and correctly mentions the idea that economic success does not always lead to happiness or quality of life. However, the explanation may be 중 partial or underdeveloped, with only one reason mentioned or summarized inaccurately. Some details or key terms may be missing, but the main idea is still understandable. - The student fails to understand the passage. 하 - The student presents a clear and well-reasoned opinion on whether governments should prioritize economic growth or citizens’ happiness. The argument is logical, supported by specific reasons or examples, 상 and shows awareness of the trade-offs involved (e.g., sustainability, inequality, social well-being). The answe

(Answer Keys) 1-1 - The student correctly summarizes the "prosperity paradox": a strong economic performance and life satisfaction/well-being/other measures of quality of life (such as life expectancy) and trust in the government can be unrelated, such as in the case of the United States. - Reasons named in the text: growing inequality (gains in GDP per capita were driven by gains for the wealthiest 10% of the population), accompanied by social and political polarization; abundance/wealth itself since human brains evolved for scarcity, and we tend to overconsume in environments where everything is abundant, resulting in sickness 1-2 The student names either growth or happiness as a policy goal that should be pursued in advanced economies. Possible reasons to name economic growth (among others): - economic growth is needed to afford a good life (up to a certain point) - economic growth can be accompanied by income gains for all groups and can be sustainable/green - polarization can be mitigated by government regulation and laws/taxes, such as inheritance or wealth taxes or regulations (such as management compensation caps) - innovation and technological advancement: economic growth fuels investment in research, development, and innovation, which can improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure. - global influence and stability: a strong economy enhances a nation's geopolitical influence and ability to respond to global crises, including pandemics, wars, an

Stanford University, said that “our brains evolved for a world of scarcity, and the kind of abundance
